Selected problems of concrete structures from the beginning of the 20th centuries in the United States

Keywords: concrete structures, concrete design, standards, civil engineering
Abstract:

During everyday engineering activities, the issue of variability in time of design principles, in particular the
evolution of standard regulations, is often overlooked. In the case of structures, the period of their most intense
development was the beginning of the 20th century. The place where this development was particularly
visible is the United States of America. One of the best-known objects from that period is the high-rise building
of the Ingalls Building reinforced concrete structure in Cincinnati, Ohio. The paper presents the evolution
of the design principles of concrete structures in the United States with particular reference to the beginning
of the 20th century. Knowledge comes from a book shared by Auburn University archive in Alabama.
